Thermal Energy Equation | Thermal Energy Formula

Share on:

Thermal Energy equation is also known as thermal energy formula. It is used to measure the thermal energy. Now before understanding the equation of thermal energy, we have to understand what is thermal energy.

Thermal energy is the energy which is generated from heat itself. The heat production happens because there are a lot of movement between the particle of that heat generating object. Basically thermal energy is directly proportional to the speed of moving particle inside that object.

The temperature of that object along with the potential energy and kinetic energy affects the thermal energy also. Thermal Energy tells us a lot about the temperature of the object. ‘Q’ is the symbol which is used to denote it. This energy is directly proportional to the specific heat, mass of substance and the temperature difference between those two substances.

Joules(J) is the international standard unit (SI Unit) of Thermal Energy.

Practice Questions

Question 1

Find the thermal energy of a 10 kg substance that is undergoing a temperature difference of 50°c, where the specific heat mentioned 0.020 J/kg°c.

Solution:

Given:

m = 10 kg,
c = 0.020J/kg°c
ΔT = 50°c

The thermal energy formula is given by,

Q = mcΔT

   = 10 x 0.020 x 50

  Q = 10 J

Question 2

A substance that is weighted 2 kg has a temperature difference of 60°c with a specific heat of 0.060 J/kg°c. Find out the value of Thermal Energy (Q).

Solution:

Given:

m = 2 kg,
c = 0.060 J/kg°c
ΔT = 60°c

The thermal energy formula is given by,

Q = mcΔT

   = 2 x 0.060 x 60

  Q = 7.2 J

Question 3

If an object is weighted 8 kg and it shows a temperature difference of 30°c. The value of the specific heat of the object is 0.050 J/kg°c. Find out the value of Q.

Solution:

Given:

m = 2 kg,
c = 0.060 J/kg°c
ΔT = 60°c

The thermal energy formula is given by,

Q = mcΔT

   = 8 x 0.050 x 30

  Q = 12 J
