Google Doodle remembers Indian Swimmer Arati Saha: Google is celebrating the 80th birthday of Indian long-distance swimmer Aarti Saha today. She was born on 24 September 1940 in Kolkata.
Aarti Saha became the first Asian woman to swim across the English Channel – a feat believed to be equivalent to climbing Mount Everest. She made a breathtaking cover 42 miles from Cape Gris Nez, France to Sandgate, England, which is featured in today’s doodles. Ms. Saha won her first swimming gold medal when she was only five years old. She learned to swim on the banks of the Hooghly River, and his masterful skill in the water soon attracted the advice of Sachin Nag, one of India’s top competitive swimmers.

At the age of 11, Ms. Saha became the youngest member in the first team to represent the newly independent India at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. At the age of 18, Ms. Saha made her first attempt to cross the English Channel, and although it failed, she never gave up. Exactly a month later, she conquered several miles of waves and streams to complete the journey, a historic victory for women across India.

Saha also participated in several long distance swimming competitions that will be held in the Ganges River. At the Butlin International Cross Channel Swimming Race in 1958, Brijen Das became the first of men and had the distinction of being the first person from the Indian subcontinent to cross the English Channel.
