Bhubaneswar: Former Odisha minister and BJD MLA from Pipili constituency Pradeep Maharathy died on Sunday (October 4) due to Covid-19 infection. Maharathi was 65 years old and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
The senior BJD leader allegedly tested positive for the novel coronavirus on 14 September and was put on ventilator support due to his declining health.

Maharathi was first elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly from the Pipili assembly constituency in 1985 on a Janata Party ticket.
He was elected as a seven-time MLA from Pipili, of which five were on the Biju Janata Dal (2000-2019) ticket and once on the Janata Party (1985) and Janata Dal (1990).
The Maharathi handled important portfolios like Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Supply, Agriculture, and Fisheries during his terms in Odisha.
Maharathi was awarded the 2016 Global Agricultural Leadership Award and Krishi Karman Award 2014-15 for outstanding work in the field of agriculture.
